Most people wash their hair wrong - How to do it right

They don't love you

We have been brainwashed to wash our hair wrong for decades. Big corporations ultimately want to sell more (the lightbulb was designed to be less efficient and durable in order to make a bigger profit). All of the commercials we see for shampoo feature a huge lather with lots of soap. We grow up seeing this and learning that it's the proper way to cleanse. They have intentionally trained us to feel that without a good lather, we aren't actually clean. They won, and when people were noticing their hair being more brittle/ dry/prone to breakage/easily tangled/dull, they just added wax to their products to give your hair that "lustrous shine" back and be stronger, they won again... But by having a wax coating on your hair, it seals up the cuticle, preventing moisture from entering AND leaving. It may add strength, but only for a short period of time. Prolonged use of these ingredients will ultimately produce broken damaged hair. So you are stuck wondering why your hair is dull and broken, feeling helpless as to what to do - because you've tried everything.

Good luck on your hair journey!

  1. Use the Right Products - make sure that you are using shampoo that is designed for your specific hair type. You also need to ensure your products do not contain any of the ingredients listed at the bottom as they are damaging and some are very toxic.
  2. Saturate your Hair Thoroughly with Water - every strand needs to be thoroughly saturated for the best results, if your hair is dense then use your fingers to separate sections allowing water to penetrate.
  3. Do Not Use too much Shampoo - People generally have no idea how much shampoo to use in the shower. And if you use a fancy shampoo, you could be washing a lot of money down the drain. Sulfate-free shampoos (aka color-safe shampoos) do not sud and can trick you into thinking they aren't not cleansing properly. People will continue to add product in hopes of a better lather. For short hair, aim for the size of a nickel. For medium-length, aim for a quarter. If you have long hair, use about a half-dollar. You only need a light lather, don't believe the commercials!
  4. Only on your Scalp - Shampoo should only ever be applied to your scalp unless your hair is covered in something that can't be removed without water. We only need shampoo on the scalp because that it where new oil is coming from and where it builds up. Applying shampoo anywhere else is stripping away the natural protective layer our natural oils are meant to build.
  5. Rinse Thoroughly - Not rinsing out shampoo all the way will cause your hair to feel dry and brittle. It will cause buildup and that can be very difficult to remove.
  6. USE CONDITIONER - No Skips! - Always use conditioner, even if it's your "no-wash" day. The exposure of the elements to our hair causes it to dry out during the day, and if you are cleansing the oils with fresh, lighter oils (conditioner) it will train your sebaceous glands to not produce as much oil since you are keeping the hair properly moisturized. Start by squeezing any excess water from your hair and then apply all over - really working and combing it through. This is also when all of those loose hairs will be able to fall out so don't freak out and think your hair is falling out - the hairs were already out, but your natural oils were holding them close to your scalp.
  7. Rinse on Cool and Don't Rinse it all Away - The cuticle is lifted with heat which allows moisture to be pushed into the cortex. For maximum moisture retention, rinse out your conditioner with cool water (this is also really good for your skin) so that the cuticle lays back down to seal in the hydration. But be careful not to rinse it all away, your hair should still feel pretty slippery. If it isn't, then you have rinsed out all of the conditioner. Think about lotion, when we put it on we allow it to soak into our skin, we don't rinse it off otherwise it needs to be reapplied.
  8. Use a Microfiber Towel - Use a towel designed for hair, traditional bath towels rough up the cuticle and create frizz.
