How to make your makeup last longer

Preparation is the Foundation

When having our makeup done or even doing it ourselves, we want it to last all day. We spent precious time amplifying our features, money on the products, and who has time to be reapplying or touching up makeup several times a day? We want to wear our look with confidence that it won't shift or melt. As with anything, there is a proper way to apply makeup in order to achieve longevity - preparation. You will want to start keeping up with a skincare routine as this will help plump your skin, remove any dead/loose skin, hydrate, and create a perfect canvas. All you need is 5 minutes morning and night to achieve this, and girl, it will be worth it - take it from a 12 year cosmetologist. Think of actual canvas and paper that is painted on, the texture of the base shines through - unless there are thick heavy layers, and while it it's captivating as an art, no one wants to wear a pound of makeup on their face.

Good luck on your beauty journey!

  • Prepare the Perfect Canvas - apply a good water based moisturizer to your skin for hydration and smoothing
  • Primer - this is essential because it smooths out the texture of your skin
  • Apply Concealer - cover any unwanted blemishes with color corrective concealers
  • Layer, layer, layer - I can't stress this one enough. Layers are a surefire way to have long lasting makeup. By setting the layer of makeup you just perfectly placed, you are essentially nailing it down.
  • Setting Powder - applying a loose setting powder between layers will ensure that nothing shifts or moves throughout the day
  • Setting Spray - the Holy Grail of long lasting makeup, think of it as a hairspray designed for your skin. Like hairspray, setting spray will hold everything into place for a long period of time.
  • Matte Lipstick - glossy shades are beautiful, but they do not last. A matte lip will stay all day and you won't have to worry about a stain on your teeth or constantly reapplying, or worrying about a smudge.
  • Enjoy your day - Walk around confidently knowing your work is preserved and people will be able to admire your art.

My Recommended Steps for

Lasting Makeup

I truly believe in not over complicating things, lasting makeup doesn't need to be a 2 hour process with a bunch of products that are probably not good for your skin anyway. Take it back to the basics, the tried and true methods, we still hear about these methods for a reason. If we look at the history of makeup, going back to the earliest recorded uses of makeup, we land in the time of the Egyptians (1st dynasty 3100-2907 BC). They used unguent, which was a scented substance that was worn by both men and women to help moisturize their skin and to avoid wrinkles - the first lotion! Egyptians believed that cleanliness and beauty were pleasing to the gods so they wore perfumed oils, bathed daily in the river, and used different dyes to to enhance their appearance. As makeup caught on with the romans in the first century AD, we see rouge (blush) and white chalk being used - eventually progressing to poisonous lead oxide being added as a means for longer lasting makeup since their beauty ideals were so unrealistic (no one has naturally snow white skin). This is where makeup history takes a dark turn as people's faces were being eaten away while there were being driven mad at the same time from the poison. Progressing to the Victorian era in the 1800's, we find women using substantially less makeup because they were looked at with disdain should they tamper with their natural look. Using oatmeal, honey, and egg yolks they would create face masks. They would use rice powder to dust their noses and massage castor oil into their eyelashes. Women would pinch or rub red beet juice into their cheeks to give them a healthy look. Makeup finally takes a turn back to a cleaner more natural side (aside from belladonna, commonly known as deadly night shade, being applied to the eyes for brighter eyes). By the 1920's, women were finding their independence through their makeup by using bright red lipsticks. From then on makeup was a form of expression and was progressively tailored to each persons features. Today, makeup tends to be more natural and take different elements from the past and incorporate them into daily looks.

If we look back, we can see that skincare was implemented at the same time makeup began to be used, ingredients were natural and it lasted. As humans, we overcomplicated and toxified it on our quest for "true beauty" (ew). Thankfully we have gained enough knowledge and wisdom to stop those practices and take it back to the basics. Lasting makeup isn't complicated, you don't need the latest science - you need quality natural ingredients and methods that work harmoniously with our skin.
